I took this picture while down in Melbourne for Christmas
2003. I used my old Nikon N80 film camera because my digital
coolpix 5700 was stolen just a month before. I had been looking
forward to using the 5700 in an airplane.. but I guess thats
life!
We got up before sunrise and drove from our hotel in the city
to Morrabin airfield where my brother Glenn (the pilot) was
preparing the plane. We took off at sunrise and followed Port
Phillip bay down to the Heads where we crossed the bay to
Torquay, the start of the Great Ocean Road. We then followed
the coast to Apollo bay where we crossed the forest surrounding
Cape Otway.
We were not sure exactly where we were when we hit the coast
again, and couldn't guage how far awya our target was and
became a little worried as we were running low on fuel due
to a strong headwind. Just when we were considering turning
back we spotted the famous landmark up ahead. We made a few
slow low level passes, then returned home again.
The picture above was taken Xmas 1998 as part of a driving
trip from Melbourne to Adelaide, Kangaroo Island then back
to Sydney. The rough weather you can see was part of the front
that hit the Sydney to Hobart yacht race, a storm that resulted
in the death of 6 sailors.
The flash film below is of the low flyby we did of the 12
Apostles on the 2003 flight.
