This is a picture I took just after New Years 2009, while flying around the Mornington Peninsula in Melbourne. We flew from Moorabbin airport down to Cape Schanck then along the coast to Port Phillip Heads then up along the bay beaches.
I learnt when researching the Beachwiki page for Cape Schanck that there are cottages near the lighthouse that you can stay at, which I think would be pretty fun. You can also walk here from Gunnamatta beach, though Im not sure how yet how long it would take..
This was the last photo I took in Melbourne before driving back along the coast to Sydney. I stopped here at sunset, had a quick surf then had a drink on the beach while watching the sun go down. Looks like I might have to go back to Melb next week to see my dad, but this time I will fly, not drive…
On Sunday we drove to Hawks Nest, 3 hours north of Sydney. I took my 4wd onto the beach and drove on the sand up to Little Gibber Beach. The rest of the coast was blown out by an onshore wind, but this beach was protected by the headland and had nice clean waves. We went surfing for an hour, then set up a BBQ on the sand out the back of the car…
I’ve got a few more pics from Port Phillip Bay I’ll post later, got impatient and wanted to skip to the surf beaches. Portsea Backbeach is on the narrow strip near the end of Mornington Peninsula, about a kilometre or so behind Portsea Bay Beach.
From Frankston I drove to Mornington Beach, stopped at a restaurant called Rocks, at the Marina, for a cold drink before moving on again…
Continuing down Port Phillip Bay, next stop was Frankston Beach, about 40kms south from Melbourne. I stopped there for lunch and walked out to the pier before taking this picture. There are a couple of good restaurants on the beach, next time Im down this way I plan to eat at Sofias, which is right on the beach.
Created new pages on Beachwiki.org – Brighton Beach and Black Rock Beach (above), both bayside beaches near Melbourne. Black Rock is an important beach to me, I visited here regularly when I was a teenager. We used to go snorkeling and diving around the old Cerberus wreck, then spearfishing on the outer reef.
Added new page to Beachwiki.org – St Kilda Beach – Melbourne featuring above picture of St kilda pier I took on Xmas day last year.
This is Pambula Beach, on the far south coast of NSW, near the border with Victoria. I passed through just after New Years and despite the blue sky in this shot it rained for most of my trip back to Sydney.
Added new picture to Gallery from trip to Mana Island, Fiji last year. Was no need to create HDR from this picture as light was already perfect…
