Resort, West Java Indo | |

| July-06-
Spent a couple of weeks in Indonesia visiting mu Fiance's friends and family..
spent most of the time at Bandung which is FAR from the coast. Talked everyone
into going on a short weekend trip to Carita/Anyer on the west coast of Java Island..
which we reckoned was around a 5 hour trip. Nine hours later we arrived just before
sunset. Place was ok, was hoping to find some surf but apparently the only break
working that weekend was another "couple" of hours down the coast...
and by then we'd all had enought of driving. The resort was supposed to
be 5 star.. it was certainly priced that way, especially by indo standards, but
it was more like a 3 star by Aussie standards, though few hotel rooms in Oz come
with their own Cabin Boy. The girls had him doing everything from cleaning fish,
going to the markets and doing the dishes.... me, I just sent him to the bar to
get a couple of Bintang's. |

The area around the
resort was a coral reef enclave. Main activity in the area is fishing... you can
see the platforms they fish from in the picture above. Made from bamboo they are
anchored by heavy rocks, and easily replaced when the odd one blows away in a
storm (No one mentioned what happens to the fishermen). While walking around
the beach area taking photos we were approached by a guy who offered to take us
out to Krakatoa Island, which is just of the coast here, the next day for $200.
The government banned tourists from the area due to the likelyhood of another
eruption. I was tempted, but commonsense prevailed. Anyone who has been on a road
in Indo is aware of the governments low safety standards (read family of five
on a 2 stroke bike), so if they think something is dangerous you should probably
listen. Kraka is not to be taken lightly, either. There is technically no indigenous
population on this coast because around 1887 Kracka erupted, sending a 40m high
wave into this coast that wiped out everything and everyone. (A week after we
were here yet another Tsunami hit the coast not far south of here, centered around
Pangandaran) |

This was my third
trip to Indo so I had already learned most of the tricks someone with a sensitive
stomach needs to survive in south east asia. I was doing fine, got through the
two weeks with no problems, was even feeling cocky. Then I made the fatal mistake
of ordering from the "Western" menu at the resort. The fish and chips
were not nice to eat, and the next morning I was in real trouble food posioning
wise, and with a nine hour tour of bumpy Indo roads and exotic asian toilet holes
to look forward to. It was not all bad though... on one of our frequent
stops I got a nice picture of a rice paddy on the beach (Above) and a good sunset
pic just north of Anyer (below). The
weather was a bit better this morning.. there was even odd patches of sunlight
between the rainy squalls. I shouldn't complain about the weather though... at
least its consistent! From Mt Eden we visited a Maori museuem before eating lunch
at one of the beaches along Mission Bay, which all have great views of Rangitoto
Island... yet another volcano. |
