Xmas Trip 31 – Warrnambool, Vic

Warrnambool

Got into Warrnambool late, so checked out the breakwall and beach area in the morning. I wasn’t expecting much, so was pleasantly surprised to find out how nice the area is. The first picture above is of a pier along the breakwall, while below you can see the results of a lobster boat returning from the sea..

Xmas Trip 30 – Loch Ard Gorge

Loch Ard Gorge

Got here just as the sun set, so no time for London Bridge. Its a full moon tonight, but as the sun has set into the water the moon will be behind us. It will make the hour drive to Warrnambool a bit easier though..

Xmas Trip 29 – The Twelve Apostles

Twelve Apostles FE

This is the view from the 2nd lookout at the site, this one you have to walk around to. The sun came out and stayed out, which was good considering how gloomy it looked earlier. We’ve taken too long to get here though.. doubtful we will have enough time to do Loch ard Gorge and London bridge before it gets dark..

Xmas Trip 28 – The Twelve Apostles

Twelve Apostles 1

Just as we approached the famous Apostles the weather finally broke, the rain stopped and the sun even showed through the clouds in spots. Note in the first picture the rubble of one of the apostles, which collapsed a few years ago. I will need to check my older pictures of this spot to compare before and after..

Xmas Trip 27 – Apollo Bay, Great Ocean Road

Apollo Bay

The weather turned against us just past Lorne, with clouds and drizzle closing in. It also got very cold and windy. We stopped at Apollo Bay for our dinner break, eating a nice local pizza in the park on the foreshore before heading off again.

Anglesea Beach

The New Years long weekend traffic down the Great Ocean Road is very heavy, with 20 minute delays into the first few towns, including Anglesea. We stopped at the lookout just out of town for 5 minutes to take these pics..

Xmas Trip 24 - Bells Beach, Great Ocean Road

Xmas Trip 24 – Bells Beach, Great Ocean Road

Bells Beach

Long Day of driving planned for today.. first stop (after 1hr in Geelong shopping, then another 40 mins in Torquay at the surf shops), was the famous surfing spot Bells Beach. I’ve been here a few times now, and have yet to be lucky enough to witness an epic surf day, but the power of the place is detectable even on semi calm days..

Xmas Trip 23 – Eastern Beach, Geelong

Geelong Pier

We stayed on the beach until sunset, then went looking for a place for dinner. We ended up at one of the seafood crepe places near the summer fair..

Xmas Trip 22 – Eastern Beach, Geelong

Eastern Beach Geelong

Finally finished with all the Xmas dinners, BBQs and Boxing Day we left Melbourne late afternoon and headed south to Geelong. We had looked at accommodation further down the Great Ocean Road, but understandably everything was booked out. We had thought about booking earlier, but if the weather was foul we would have bypassed this part of the coast.

In the end it worked out well, as the foreshore along Geelong is now a very interesting place.

Xmas Trip 21 - St Kilda Beach

Xmas Trip 21 – St Kilda Beach

St Kilda

I walked out onto the pier at sunset.. there is a colony of little penguins that live in the break wall past the kiosk, but they took their time coming back in and it was past dark before they arrived.

Xmas Trip 18 – Squeaky Beach, Vic

Squeaky Beach

We stopped at Squeaky Beach on Wilson’s Prom for about an hour. True to its name, the fine white sand makes a high pitched sound when you walk on it. This is my second short trip to Squeaky.. I really want to spend more time at the Prom in the near future…
